ABOUT
Why we built VINly.
Used-car shopping starts with fragmented information: a VIN on a dashboard, a thin listing, government databases, and several browser tabs. VINly starts with the VIN and turns those public signals into a research dossier before the buyer contacts a seller.
VINly is free VIN research plus listings: the public safety record before you shop.
Why now
Three things are true in 2026 that weren't true even three years ago:
Used-car prices stayed elevated. Edmunds and Kelley both show used-car ATP roughly 18% above 2019. The cost of a bad purchase has grown faster than the cost of catching one.
Listings got noisier. Thin descriptions, duplicated inventory, and missing context make it harder to decide which cars are worth seeing. A validated VIN gives the research a reliable starting point.
Public data became easier to use. NHTSA and EPA expose valuable vehicle information, but raw records are difficult to interpret in the middle of a purchase. The work is presenting those records clearly and proportionately.
What we believe
Underpromise. VINly shows sources, labels missing data, and avoids turning a common recall or a popular model's complaint volume into an alarmist verdict.
Don't build a Carfax. Carfax has a real business and a real product. We aren't trying to replace it. We're trying to be what you run before you decide whether the listing is worth $40 to check.
Don't pretend to be a mechanic. Public-record research is an input to a hands-on inspection, not a substitute for one.
Respect the buyer. No accounts, ads, newsletter, or paywall on the current research product. Optional product analytics are limited to understanding how VINly is used.
