ABOUT
Why we built VINly.
Used cars on private-party platforms are at an honesty deficit. The listing is whatever the seller felt like writing, the photo set is whatever fit in the upload limit, and the asking price is whatever the seller saw on Carfax minus a coffee. The buyer brings themselves to the table — usually with browser tabs open, a few Reddit threads, and the vague hope that something looks off enough to catch it before driving out.
VINly is the second opinion you should run before you drive 45 minutes to see a $24,000 SUV from a stranger.
Why now
Three things are true in 2026 that weren't true even three years ago:
Used-car prices stayed elevated. Edmunds and Kelley both show used-car ATP roughly 18% above 2019. The cost of a bad purchase has grown faster than the cost of catching one.
Marketplace listings got noisier. Facebook Marketplace specifically — the dominant private-party channel by 2026 — runs more thin descriptions, more re-listed inventory, more soft scams than it did three years ago. Carfax can't help here because Carfax requires a VIN you trust.
AI grounding crossed a quality bar. Anthropic's Claude (Sonnet 4.6 specifically) can now do the model-knowledge research that previously required a friend who's deep in the relevant owner forum. The hard part stopped being "can a model know about a 1UR-FE valley plate" and started being "can we present what it knows responsibly."
What we believe
Underpromise. Every model-level claim in a VINly report is tagged verified, likely, or possible. If a claim can't cite a source, it isn't load-bearing. Users get the math, the sources, and the honesty that AI can be wrong — not a confident verdict in a marketing wrapper.
Don't build a Carfax. Carfax has a real business and a real product. We aren't trying to replace it. We're trying to be what you run before you decide whether the listing is worth $40 to check.
Don't pretend to be a mechanic. A buyer's report is the input to a hands-on inspection, not the output. Every report ends with a checklist for the test drive and a list of things to bring to the shop.
Respect the buyer. No accounts. No tracking. No newsletter. No "limited time" pressure. The product earns its $3.99 each time you open it.
